Used Car Warranty

The most important thing that can be said about the used car warranty is that you wont find much alteration in them from dealer to dealer. In simple terms, when you buy a car from a dealer, there won't be much of a difference what this dealer offers to you and the dealer you never bothered to look. The most common form or the standard that can be expected from a used car warranty is a 3 month/3000 mile warranty that will cover only major parts like the engine, transmission and rear end components.

There is a possibility that the factory warranty of that used car may get transferred, if you buy a late model car. The point that should be noted here is that these warranties are all "either/or" meaning that the warranty ends when either the mentioned time or the specified mileage surpasses, whichever occurs first.

Whatever the warranty covers and whatever its benefits are, be absolutely sure about the limits of the warranty coverage and get everything on the paper. Don't be surprised if you find that many warranties have more items not covered than what the warranty should cover. It is always better to talk about it rather than waiting for a horrifying surprise, especially when a component breaks and you find out that it was in the excluded list.

The below given table illustrates some of the terms, mileage, and coverage that are available on typical used car warranties (Note: - The information in the table is a generalized and not specific to any company)

Some Typical Used Car Warranty Terms and Coverages

When purchasing from a Private Owner, with the exception of the potential of some balance of factory warranty, the sale will be As-Is. For those who purchase As-Is vehicles, or with very limited warranties (either in time or coverage) an extended warranty may be a smart consideration.
